Amylose content is a parameter that correlates with the cooking behavior of rice. It is measured at the earliest possible stages of rice improvement programs to enable breeders to build the foundations of appropriate grain quality during cultivar development. Amylose is usually quantified by absorbance of the amylose-iodine complex. The International Network for Quality Rice (INQR) conducted a survey to determine ways that amylose is measured, reproducibility between laboratories, and sources of variation. Each laboratory measured the amylose content of a set of 17 cultivars of rice. The study shows that five different versions of the iodine binding method are in use. The data show that repeatability was high within laboratories but reproducibility between laboratories was low. The major sources of variability were the way the standard curve was constructed and the iodine binding capacity of the potato amylose used to produce the standard. Reproducibility is much lower between laboratories using a standard curve of potato amylose alone compared with those using calibrated rice cultivars. This study highlights the need to standardize the way amylose is measured, and presents research avenues for doing so. |

RESUMEN.
Los objetivos de este estudio fueron resumir la información reciente generada en el país sobre fertilización potásica y encontrar un nivel crítico orientativo de potasio (K) en el suelo para varios cultivos realizados en Uruguay, usando el método de análisis de K más difundido. Los datos provienen de 50 experimentos de respuesta a K en cultivos de cebada, trigo, maíz, soja, sorgo y girasol, realizados durante el período 2004 a 2010, en suelos de diferente textura y niveles de K intercambiable, llevados a cabo por distintos grupos de
trabajo. Las dosis de fertilización aplicadas variaron entre 0 a 240 kg/ha de K2O y en todos los casos se usó KCl aplicado al voleo a la siembra. Se observó aumento de rendimiento por el agregado de K en 15 de 50 sitios (Pr < 0,10). Para la determinación del nivel crítico se incluyeron los tratamientos testigo (sin K) y el promedio de las dosis de 60 y 120 kg/ha de K2O. Considerando todos los sitios y cultivos, el nivel crítico de K intercambiable encontrado fue 0,34 meq/100 g de suelo. Este valor debería tomarse como indicador provisorio de suelos deficientes en K. Los resultados obtenidos demuestran la necesidad de profundizar los estudios de la dinámica de este nutriente en suelos de Uruguay.
SUMMARY.
The objectives of this study were to summarize the recent information generated in the country related to the potassium fertilization and find a tentative critical level of Potassium (K) in soil for various crops in Uruguay, using the most widely used K soil test. The data come from 50 K?response experiments in barley, wheat, corn, soybeans, sorghum, and sunflower, conducted by different working groups from 2004 to 2010, in soils with different texture and exchangeable K levels. The fertilizer rates ranged from 0 to 240 kg/ha of K2
O and in all cases the source of K was broadcasted KCl at planting date. Potassium fertilizer increased crop yield in 15 of 50 sites (Pr < 0.10). To determine the critical level, we included the control treatments (without K) and the average of the rates of 60 and 120 kg/ha of K2O. Across all sites and crops, the critical level of exchangeable K was 0.34 meq/100 g soil. This value should be taken as a preliminary indicator of K deficiency in soils. The results demonstrate the need for further studies of the dynamics of this nutrient in soils of Uruguay. MenosRESUMEN.
